IMAGE TOOL GUIDE

Match the operation to the visual change

Image tools change pixels, dimensions or encoding. Select the output format based on the final use: JPEG is usually compact for photographs, PNG preserves transparency and sharp interface graphics, and WebP can provide a useful balance of size and quality in modern browsers.

Resize when the image needs exact pixel dimensions, crop when unwanted edges should be removed, and compress when dimensions are already correct but the file is too large. Conversion changes the encoding format and does not automatically improve a low-resolution source. Watermarking is useful for identification or attribution, while merging places several sources onto one new canvas.

Understand transparency, animation and re-encoding

JPEG cannot retain transparent pixels, and converting an animated format through a still-image workflow may keep only one frame. Repeated lossy conversion can introduce visible artifacts even when dimensions do not change. Check colour, transparency, orientation and edge detail in the preview, then retain the original file in case a different output setting is needed.

Frequently asked questions

Does changing JPG to PNG improve image quality?

No. PNG avoids additional lossy compression, but it cannot restore detail already removed from a JPEG source.

When should I preserve transparency?

Keep PNG or WebP output when logos, cut-outs or interface assets require transparent areas. JPEG replaces transparency with a solid background.

Why can a smaller image still have a large file size?

File size also depends on format, colour complexity, metadata and quality settings. Pixel dimensions are only one part of the result.
